LGBTIQ activists and allies on January 14 celebrated a new rainbow crossing which was finally completed last December, after six years of campaigning.

They chanted “What do we want? Trans rights!” and “Whose streets? Our streets!” as they crossed Yarra Street.

Sarah Hathway, Socialist Alliance councillor on the City of Greater Geelong, told Green Left that having a visible sign of support for LGBTIQ rights is a “really positive step”.

“We’ve been talking about a rainbow crossing since 2017 when we formed Geelong Rainbow as part of the marriage equality campaign.”
