1998 fighting fund

1998 is already shaping up as an eventful year in Australian and world politics.

Across Asia, the capitalist "miracle" is looking decidedly dodgy; the negotiations in Ireland and the Middle East are fast approaching crunch time; in Australia, the Howard government is desperately trying to decide whether or not to call an early race-based election that it might not win, or risk going to the polls later in a context of even higher unemployment and social insecurity.

As these events, and more, unfold during the year, Green Left Weekly plans to be there, keeping you informed about the developments, the agendas (hidden and open), the vested interests and the people involved.

We will also continue to bring you the news and analysis from Africa, Latin America, Europe, Russia, Asia and anywhere else that people are struggling for justice and the environment.

And when you need a break, we'll let you know about the latest in cultural dissent — the music, the plays, the books, the humour.

Green Left Weekly is able to expose the lies of the capitalist media and undermine their "manufactured consent" because we are beholden to no-one except those struggling for a better world.

We receive neither government nor corporate funding. Rather, Green Left is the best radical paper in Australia because thousands of ordinary people read it, value it, support its goals and contribute some of their hard-earned money to the annual Green Left Weekly Fighting Fund. These funds cover the difference between the production costs and cover price of Green Left.

Each year, Green Left Weekly supporters work, save, cook, eat, drink, spruik, type, dance and talk their way through the year to raise the funds necessary to keep the GLW presses rolling. This year will be no different.

You can show your support for an environment- and people-centred alternative to corporate greed and destruction in many ways. Donations, whether small or large, to the GLW Fighting Fund are always needed and greatly appreciated.

You can also keep your eye on the "Meetings ... Parties ... Anything ..." pages for Green Left Weekly sponsored events in your city and come along to them. And you can keep Green Left in mind at tax return time, or in your will. In a very direct way, every dollar donated to Green Left will be another step towards justice and human survival.

The Green Left Weekly 1998 Fighting Fund was launched at the Democratic Socialist Party and Resistance's national education conference in Sydney early this month. At the launching rally, members and supporters of those two organisations pledged $80,000 towards the 1998 fund. If you like what you see in this paper, if you want to be better informed, if you want to help create a more just and healthy world, you have every reason to join them and make a donation to the 1998 Fighting Fund. Green Left Weekly — it's your paper.
