WOLLONGONG — The Wollongong Abortion Rights Campaign was officially launched here on October 1, Abortion Rights Day. Fifty people attended a candlelight vigil, which heard from WARC's Jill Hickson and the Uniting Church's Reverend Pamela Kestel.
The vigil went ahead despite initial strong opposition from the local city council.
WARC is seeking sponsorship from local identities and organisations, and is already strongly supported by the Wollongong Women's Centre. The campaign has launched a petition seeking 20,000 signatures from the area. WARC hopes to link up with other pro-choice groups around the state through the newly formed NSW Coalition for Repeal of Abortion Laws.
