Anti-racist activist targeted
SYDNEY — A campaign of intimidation continues against anti-racist activist and Democratic Socialist Party member Marina Carman. Carman played a leading role in protests against Pauline Hanson's One Nation party in 1998. At that time, the neo-Nazi group National Action produced a newsletter publicising Carman's address.
On June 19, urine was poured under the door of Carman's house. A week earlier, a copy of a National Action newsletter had been put in Carman's letterbox. Other houses in the street did not receive the newsletter. Urine has also been twice poured on the front door of the Resistance Centre in Chippendale in the last few months.
"This is a typical example of the cowardly approach of these sort of organisations. They aren't interested in open debate and resort to individual intimidation", Carman told Green Left Weekly.
Solidarity with wounded protesters
MELBOURNE — A lively group of protesters staged an action on June 21 outside the Swedish car dealership SAAB in South Melbourne. The protest was called by the O3 to CHOGM Alliance to condemn the shooting of civilians who participated in the protest against the Gothenburg summit of European Union leaders.
Hamish McPherson highlighted the fact that SAAB was not an innocent car producer but made billion dollar profits through arms manufacturing. It was pointed out that the shootings have exposed the myth of Sweden being the most liberal country in the world.
