Dave Oliver.

Dave Oliver announced his resignation as secretary of the Australian Council of Trade Unions on January 31 after five years in the post. Vice-president Sally McManus is likely to take the role.

In 2004, Oliver who had been appointed Victorian secretary of the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union by then national AMWU secretary Doug Cameron, expelled Craig Johnston, a former Victorian branch secretary. This followed years of a vilification campaign against Johnson and the militant Workers’ First group he had helped form.

Oliver has been roundly congratulated for his role in the ACTU, including from the Australian Industry Group.
