SYDNEY — Plans for a campaign against the military crackdown in Indonesia were mapped out at an emergency meeting here on August 16.
Called by Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor, the meeting was attended by a broad range of community and political groups, including Amnesty International, Nuclear Free and Independent Pacific, the Uniting Church, Australian-East Timor Association, Resistance, the Communist League and the Democratic Socialist Party.
ASIET national coordinator Max Lane reported on the most recent developments in Indonesia and the growing international response. A public meeting to highlight these issues will be held in Sydney on August 30 and will be addressed by Dr George Aditjondro, Nico Warouw and Max Lane.
Other plans include participation in the August 25 national day of solidarity with East Timor and a picket outside a meeting of APEC energy ministers on August 28. The meeting also agreed to support a petition campaign calling for the release of all political prisoners in Indonesia and an international hunger strike to be held on October 28.
