Attempt to kill Nidia Diaz

Maria Marta Valladares (Nidia Diaz), former rebel commander and current Assembly vice president in El Salvador, has charged that four death squad members shot 22 rounds at her vehicle on May 19, wounding her driver/bodyguard Elmer Cruz Pineda. Diaz was not in the vehicle at the time. This is the second such attack against her this year; Cruz Pineda was also wounded in the earlier attack on February 24. On May 20, the 30-year-old Roberto D'Aubuisson, oldest son of the late right-wing ARENA party founder of the same name, was wounded in the leg by gunfire in a similar attack. His father is thought to have founded El Salvador's death squads.
