BOTSWANA: Bushmen threatened at gunpoint

September 14, 2005
Issue

Survival International reported on September 5 that Bushmen in the Central Kalahari Game Reserve have been threatened at gunpoint by wildlife guards in an attempt to force them to abandon their homes. This is part of a crackdown by Botswana's government on the Gana and Gwi Bushmen. All outsiders, including the media, have been banned from the reserve. In 2002, 30 of those Bushmen still living in the reserve resisted eviction and the rest returned after the eviction. Hundreds more desperately await return in resettlement camps.
