Australian Biography: Tom Uren — Uren is one of the best known and respected Labor left politicians. Born in Balmain in 1921, Uren experienced the poverty of the depression. He was a surfie, a boxer, a prisoner of war during WWII on the Thai/Burma railway. A prison inmate in Japan when the war ended, he was one of the first westerners to see the effect of the atomic bomb. He hated militarism and fascism for the rest of his life. Uren entered parliament in 1958, was a participant in the anti-war movement in the 1960s and 1970s, and became a minister in the 1972 Whitlam Labor government. SBS, Sunday, September 7, 7pm.

The Hopi Way — A rare film that examines the way of life of the most secretive of all American Indian peoples. ABC-TV, Sunday, September 7, 11pm.

Afghanistan's Year Zero — Over the past two years, a fundamentalist Islamic army — the Taliban — has taken control of much of Afghanistan, including the capital, Kabul. This documentary meets the militants of the Taliban, examines its anti-woman, anti-democratic views, and looks at the background to the rise of this authoritarian movement. SBS, Tuesday, September 9, 8.30pm.

Quantum: Jinmium — In September 1996, a rocky outcrop in the NT known as Jinmium became world famous. A research team found evidence that Aborigines had lived there for about 166,000 years. The announcement caused a political and scientific storm. The first of a two-part documentary tells the fascination story. ABC-TV, Thursday, September 11, 8pm.

Crim TV — A riveting and moving documentary about a group of Aboriginal prisoners in Sydney's Long Bay jail "caught in the act" of making a video about the harsh reality of prison life. ABC-TV, Thursday, September 11, 8.30pm.
