Tripping with Zhirinovsky — This BBC documentary follows the right-wing Russian chauvinist leader Vladimir Zhirinovsky on the campaign trail along the Volga. Zhirinovsky's party won 23% of the vote in Russia's last parliamentary elections. "By American standards I'm a success story. In five years I rose from the bottom of the heap — from 200 roubles a month to 200 million", Zhirinovsky boasts. ABC TV, Wednesday, June 12, 8.30pm.
The Untold Story — Just 20 years ago, television came to South Africa. This program reveals the political manipulation by an apartheid-controlled South African Broadcasting Corporation management of news broadcasts and documentaries; the demonisation of Desmond Tutu; the complicity of the SABC news and drama departments with the security forces; up until the changes introduced by the current chief executive, Zwelakhe Sisulu. Men and their Sheds and Dykes on Bikes — The shed is a place where many married Australian men seem to spend a lot of time with their hobbies and themselves. What does this say about their relationships with their partners? Dykes on Bikes profiles this well-known group of women while at the same time challenging stereotypes about lesbian women. The Art of Place — This documentary deals with Australia's most important and largest exchange of art works with Vietnam, when the Hanoi Institute of Fine Art and Griffith University's Queensland College of Art collaborated on an exchange exhibition of 120 works created at each institution. A Fork in the Road — SBS's resident man-of-the-world, the suave Pria Viswalingam, continues his enlightening travel series with a visit to Chicago. He takes us around the third largest US city, with a particular emphasis on the southside, where mostly African-Americans have made their home and built a vibrant community. Pria goes beyond the stereotypes of the ghetto to show us the lifestyle, the food and the music of the area. SBS, Tuesday, June 18, 8pm.
