Police brutally repressed thousands of Brazilians who took the streets on June 30 to oppose austerity measures and the Michel Temer government. The actions were part of the second general strike in three months.
Repression occurred in major cities like Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Porto Alegre and Florianopolis.
The “general strike” included work stoppages by teachers and workers in the banking, metals, health care and oil refinery sector, among others.
Participation was much lower this time around compared to the April 28 general strike, as some labour unions actively opposed the strike while others with ties to the Workers Party (PT) refused to organise workers to participate in the strike.
Despite this, there were pickets and work stoppages around the country, with large protests occurring in nearly all of Brazil’s major cities.
