Melbourne’s City of Yarra awarded the volunteer-run climate research group Beyond Zero Emissions its 2011 sustainability award for community action on June 2.
BZE’s Melbourne group office is based in the Yarra council area.
The council said: “Beyond Zero Emissions Inc. (BZE) is an independent, not-for-profit, volunteer-run organisation leading a ‘can do’ campaign for climate solutions grounded in commercially available technologies and peer-reviewed research.
“The BZE team spread their message in a number of ways: from presentations and speaker training to a radio show, media pieces, personal briefings and monthly discussion groups.
“BZE’s major achievement to date (in partnership with the University of Melbourne’s Energy Research Institute) has been the production of the Zero Carbon Australia Stationary Energy Plan, a blueprint for the transition to a decarbonised Australian economy by 2020.
“This work shows how Australia can reach 100% renewable energy within a decade, using technology that is commercially available right now.”
The council also noted that the group has grown rapidly in the past few years. “BZE has grown from humble beginnings in their office at Kindness House in the City of Yarra to an NGO that has hundreds of volunteers and new branches in Sydney and Brisbane.”
Beyond Zero Emissions volunteers also run the Beyond Zero radio show on Melbourne’s 3CR community radio station.
[The station’s annual Radiothon runs from June 6-17. BZE supporters are urged to call 3CR on 03 9419 8377 on June 13 between 5-6pm (EST) to donate to the radio show. You can also make a donation online at http://www.givenow.com.au/cause442 ]
