MELBOURNE — Speak-outs against a possible war on Iraq were held in three Melbourne suburbs on November 23. The Footscray protest heard from Socialist Alliance candidate for Footscray Justine Kamprad, Shirley Winton from the Western Suburbs Peace Group, Sylvie Leber from the Western suburbs Refugee Action Collective, Greens election candidates Janet Rice and Jules Beckwith and Damien Lawson from the Western Suburbs Legal Service. The Keep Left agitprop group gave a street theatre performance. The action, organised by the Western Suburbs Peace Group, was chaired by Lincoln Hancock from Resistance.

In the seat of Northcote, members of the Socialist Alliance and the Greens spruiked and handed out anti-war leaflets to shoppers at Northcote Plaza. The action was followed by a barbeque to raise money for the campaign. A speakout was also held outside the Queen Victoria Markets. It was addressed by the Socialist Alliance candidate for Melbourne, Arun Pradan.
