On October 29, charges of refusing a police direction brought against six people involved in the protest against Kerry Packer's state memorial service in February were dismissed by a magistrate's court.
Socialist Alliance activist and defendant Alex Bainbridge told supporters outside the court that the main issues in the trial were free speech and the right to protest. He told Green Left Weekly, "After listening to the police evidence over three days, you get the feeling that some of these coppers have missed their calling — they should have taken up careers as fiction writers".
