CHILE: Thousands protest APEC

Tens of thousands of Chileans turned out over three days to protest the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Chile. The biggest march was on November 19, organised by the Chilean Social Forum and attended by 50,000 people. The poet Raul Zurita, an active member of the political resistance during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet, told the Santiago Times: "We are here against [US President George] Bush, against APEC, against the dictatorship of the rich." Police repression of the protest was extreme, with nearly 700 people detained, and thousands tear-gassed.
