SYDNEY — On May 31, Cuba solidarity activists set up a Free the Cuban Five Committee with aim of supporting the worldwide campaign to free five Cubans sentenced to long prison terms in the US on espionage charges.
The five Cubans had lived in Miami, the home of various organisations of right-wing Cuban emigres, which, with the support of the US government, have been involved in sponsoring numerous terrorist attacks on Cuba.
The five openly defended their role in monitoring these organisations so as to help Cuba prevent some of these terrorist attacks. However, they were convicted with spying on the US military and the murder of right-wing Cubans who had been shot down by the Cuban air force in 1996 while illegally flying over Cuban airspace.
The Free the Cuban Five Committee's next meeting will be held at the offices of the CEPU, Level 1, 741 George Street, Sydney at 6.30pm on June 14. For more information on the campaign, phone 9602 0450 or 0413 450 981 or email <freethefive@yahoo.com>.
