Socialist Alliance has welcomed support from the NSW CFMEU Construction Division for its state election campaign. The union recently voted to donate $5000 to the campaign and profiled a Socialist Alliance Upper House candidate, CFMEU member and mobile crane operator Howard Byrnes, in its latest union journal Unity.

The article, entitled “Vote for One of Our Own” said, “When CFMEU members go to the polling booths on March 28, they can make sure the views of building workers are heard with a vote for one of our own… If elected, Byrnes says he will use his voice to improve conditions for workers, including ensuring the right to organise workplace safety on site. He says the Socialist Alliance consistently supports campaigns for and by working people.”

Why are unions including the CFMEU exempt from paying income tax on income derived by them? They collect and invest millions and earn interest on those investments. Is this not income? Even the body corporate of my unit is required to pay income tax on the levies invested in the sinking fund. Seems grossly hypocritical to exempt unions.
