Cuban solidarity set up in Perth

By James Balowski

PERTH — A branch of the Cuba Solidarity Coalition has been formed here following the launching of the coalition in Melbourne last year. The group has begun planning cultural and fundraising events to promote public awareness and discussion about Cuba.

An important project will be the Ship to Cuba campaign, the aim of which is to send a shipload of food and essential supplies to Cuba next July.

Coalition spokesperson Fernando Whittaker says there is concern in Latin American communities over increasing US aggression against the small Caribbean nation. "Cuba not only represents an example of what a small, independent nation can achieve, but has come to play a vital and leading role in raising Third World issues in international forums", he said.

The coalition is supported by the African National Congress, Dr Ian Alexander MLA, the Communist Party of Chile, the Committee in Solidarity with Latin America and the Caribbean, the Democratic Socialist Party, the El Salvador Support Network, Resistance, the Socialist Party of Australia and Senator Jo Vallentine. For more information write to Cuba Solidarity Coalition, PO Box 244, Market St, Fremantle 6160, or phone (09) 368 2699 (Fernando) or (09) 419 4379 (Carlos).
