East Timor Solidarity Aid
Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor (ASIET) is launching Timor Solidarity Aid to provide material assistance to people's power-based activism in East Timor. Strength in organising, campaigning and mobilising will be needed to make sure that East Timorese voices are heard during the UN transition period.
ASIET national chairperson, Max Lane, recently visited Dili to speak with activist groups, such as the Socialist Party of East Timor (PST) and the Maubere Cooperatives Foundation (KOPERMAR). Activities to be assisted immediately include: coffee farmer cooperatives; emergency English language classes for activists, available free to all comers; and preparations for the launch of an alternative East Timorese newspaper.
ASIET has also approached Fretilin to discuss possible project assistance.
Right now, ASIET can organise the dispatch to East Timor of badly needed items. If you have any of the following to donate, please contact the ASIET national office:
- reams of paper, exercise books
- pens, pencils, whiteboard markers
- English language learning materials
- books on Third World politics and economic development
- small ink jet printers and ink cartridges
- typewriters and ribbons
- second-hand laptop computers of any generation
- tape-recorders, blank cassettes
Larger items are also welcome, such as offset printers and motorbikes.
Financial donation towards getting materials to Darwin are also needed. Make cheques to Timor Solidarity Aid Fund, C/- ASIET, PO Box 458, Broadway NSW 2007.
