Environment the top issue

ADELAIDE — A survey of southern Adelaide high schools has found that the environment is still the most important social issue for young people.

The questionnaire, put out in conjunction with Unley City Council and distributed to more than 10 high schools, asked what students believed were the pressing issues facing society today. 73% of respondents placed the environment as number one.

World poverty and unemployment were the next major issues that the students wanted addressed.

Commenting on the survey, Sarah Gormley from Environmental Youth Alliance said, "The environment has been the focus of youth concern for a long time. It is as important as any other issue, and it is time that the government wakes up to this.

"It would be fantastic if all these people, having expressed their concern, would now become active in fighting the environmental degradation that is occurring around us."
