MELBOURNE — As the first leg of his tour of Australia, Scottish Socialist Party member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) Colin Fox will be speaking at the conference Resisting the Empire: Building Alternatives to War, Racism and Imperialism at Victorian Trades Hall, on November 15.

The renowned Australian Marxist Humphrey McQueen will address the question, "Will capitalism collapse?"

According to conference organiser Graham Matthews, the Victorian co-convener of the Socialist Alliance, the conference will also discuss the "developing resistance to imperialism across the globe".

Colin Fox was one of six SSP MSPs elected on May 1. The Socialist Alliance conference will be his only public appearance in Victoria. Matthews points out that not only has the SSP got several activists elected to parliament, but it has "successfully united 95% of the socialist movement in Scotland".

The final session of the conference will be a discussion of building the socialist alternative in Australia today. "This conference falls mid-way between our last national conference, which decided to move the alliance toward a multi-tendency socialist party, and the next. It should assess how far we have come in forging a united party, and what steps we still need to take, particularly in the context of a likely federal election next year", said Matthews.
