Sukjit Kaur Khalsa has done the hard yards in fighting racism in Australia. She has given speeches to parliamentarians and caused a sensation on Australia’s Got Talent.

Fully Sikh is her (nearly) one person show that names and shames racism, but also goes beyond that.

From the moment audience members enter the foyer they find themselves introduced to Sikh culture and spirituality. Upon entering the theatre they discover there is no “fourth wall” — the presumed space between performer and audience.

Fully Sikh is autobiographical, relating Khalsa’s growing up in Perth’s suburban Leeming — essentially a template for Aussie no-wheresville. In and around tales of racism and bullying, she lovingly unfolds a rich tapestry of Sikh culture, with lots of humour.

She ends the performance by singing a Sikh hymn. I left the theatre feeling blessed.

Sukjit Kaur Khalsa’s slam performance that cut through on Australia’s Got Talent can be seen on YouTube.
