MELBOURNE — On March 5, the Melbourne-based Women for Palestine group endorsed the call issued on January 31 by the International Coordination Network on Palestine and the Palestinian Grassroots Anti-Apartheid Wall Campaign for global protests on June 9-11 under the slogan "The world says no to Israeli occupation".
In the first week of June 1967, the Israeli army invaded its Arab neighbours, occupying the Palestinian-inhabited West Bank and Gaza Strip.
In a media release, Sonia Karkar, president of Women for Palestine, said that continuation of the Israeli occupation made the future for the Palestinians "frightening — apartheid, transfer, ethnic cleansing. Their right to exist as a people in their own home land is facing the worst threat since the occupation began in 1967 ...
"Collectively, we can and must do something to open the debate so that ending the occupation becomes the issue, we need to make it happen in Australia and connect with protests happening globally."
