Yet again, Green Left Weekly's website has been ranked the most visited Australian political website by web surveying company Hitwise. We have been in this spot nearly every quarter for the past two years.
GLW qualified for a Hitwise #1 Award for the quarter ending June 2005, for the politics category (this category lists sites that belong to particular political parties or organisations, plus sites devoted to expressing views on local or international political issues).
Hitwise's ranking for top Australian political sites is based on Australian visitors to the site, discounting international users. That makes our top ranking even more remarkable, given that the GLW site log indicates that the majority of web readers are probably international visitors.
Hitwise hasn't issued the actual figures, but web ranking site alexa.com provides the following current world rankings for these Australian political sites:
Green Left Weekly 94,600
NSW Labor Council 180,076
Greens 225,230
Greenpeace 225,913
ALP 230,457
ACTU 240,165
Chaser 240,336
Liberals 326,247
CPA 590,459
Figures provided by our own service provider indicate a surge of visitors to our site last week: 12,481 on July 25, 12,830 on July 26, and 13,225 on July 27. On July 27 there was also a surge in the number of pages read by visitors; at 111,687 it was almost double the number usually read each day.
