May is proving to be a very good month for the Green Left Weekly fund appeal. This year we need to raise in excess of $100,000 — above and beyond money received from sales — in order to keep the project afloat.
Much of the money raised for Green Left each year comes from fundraising functions, staged in cities across the country. So far in May a number of these have been very successful.
Dinners celebrating May Day in Adelaide, Canberra, Perth and other cities were very well attended. Green Left supporters came in their hundreds to celebrate the tradition of working-class struggle with Green Left Weekly. Some thousands of dollars have been raised for the paper by these dinners.
As the end of the financial year approaches, every extra dollar we receive from fundraising and donations proves to be more valuable than at any other time. For the rest of the month and into June, branches of the Democratic Socialist Party and Resistance will be holding regular fundraisers to contribute to the fund appeal.
If you've never been to a Green Left fundraiser in your city, perhaps now is the time. The range of activists you'll meet is very broad, the range of discussions very wide. And usually the food and entertainment are of high quality also.
Green Left is read by those who value an independent, progressive alternative to the establishment media. Green Left Weekly fundraisers provide for the same audience. So if you're stuck for something to do next Saturday, why not check "Meetings ... Parties ... Anything" for your city (pages 29-31), and come along to a Green Left event. Green Left Weekly — it's your newspaper. n
