Government slashes funding to green groups

By Jim Green

On November 8, the federal government announced another round of funding cuts to environment groups. The government's funding program, which totals $1.65 million, will now include grants to community heritage groups even though the total pool has not been increased.

Funding for the Wilderness Society was cut by 50% ($15,000), and the Australian Conservation Foundation took a 10% ($6000) cut.

Other groups, such as the state-based conservation councils, have had their funding cut by 5%. The introduction of the goods and services tax next year will also hurt environment groups.
