In a rally organised by the Socialist Alliance during its January 2-5 national conference, pledges totalling $125,057 were made to support the Green Left Weekly 2010 fighting fund.
This is the most we've raised in a single rally and it gives us the confidence to launch our biggest annual appeal yet: $300,000 by the end of this year.
At the beginning of last year, we set ourselves a target of $250,000 and we reached $241,305 — 97% of our goal! But in 2010, with more of the left in Australia now fully united in the Socialist Alliance, we can feel more confident of exceeding our past fighting fund achievements.
Veteran Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro's new year's message focused on the climate change emergency:
"Today, however, is nothing like yesterday. We experience a new era unlike any other in history. Before, the people fought and are fighting still, with honour, for a better and more just world, but now they are also having to fight, without any alternative whatsoever, for the very survival of our species. If we ignore this, we know absolutely nothing."
GLW is a valuable part of the global movement to seriously address climate change, and in 2010 we need your continuing assistance to fund this project.
