SYDNEY — Every Sunday at 9pm, Green Left Weekly readers in Sydney can escape the usual Hollywood tripe for two hours and enjoy radical news and current affairs analysis. Channel 31's Actively Radical TV (ARTV) broadcasts a mix of documentaries, news, music and information not available on the big business channels.

“Mainstream television is just like mainstream newspapers”, ARTV's program coordinator Jill Hickson told GLW. “It reflects the values of the corporate rich. That's why we're determined that their should be an
alternative on the airwaves, one that tells the stories that the rest of the media won't broadcast.”

ARTV is the project of several groups of activists in Sydney. The first half hour of ARTV's broadcast is Voices of Protest, an alternative news and current affairs show produced by supporters of GLW.

Green Seen provides information for environmental activists, Rough Street give a voice to Sydney's poor and homeless and Romperemos TV profiles modern Latin American music.

ARTV also regularly broadcasts speeches and performances from leading left-wing activists and musicians, such as John Pilger, Tariq Ali and Michael Franti.

Channel 31 is on the UHF band, just past SBS.
