SYDNEY — High school students played an integral role in the organisation and co-ordination of last year's S11 (September 11-13) protest outside the Crown Casino in Melbourne, when 20,000 people mobilised to shut down the Asia-Pacific meeting of the World Economic Forum.
High school students took part in S11 as speakers, marshals, performers and spokespersons. On the morning of September 11, more than 500 high school students gathered at Flinder's Street Station and marched to show their opposition to the corporate scumbags' greed. It was one of the biggest contingents at the demonstration.
S11 was a great example of how young people are leading the struggle against corporate tyranny. Plans are well underway for a high school strike on M1 (May 1), the next day of action against global capitalism.
The M1 high school strike will follow in the footsteps of the anti-Hanson high school walkouts called by Resistance in 1998 and the S11 high school strike.
In the weeks before M1, several actions and demonstrations will be held as a way to mobilise and radicalise students to join the anti-corporate globalisation movement.
Resistance is calling for all progressive high school students to strike on May 1, meet at the Sydney Town Hall steps at 9am for a rally, and then march to join the peaceful mass blockade of the stock exchange. For more information call Lauren, Angela or Sophie on 9690 1977.
In Adelaide, reports Lisa Lines, the local Resistance branch has organised stalls before and after school, staffed by high school activists from Mitcham, Loretto, Cabre, Norwood Morialta and various other high schools.
On Friday afternoons, Resistance activists have been holding held Green Left Weekly stalls in Rundle Mall and urging young people to join the M1 blockade of the Stock Exchange.
A successful M1 club has been organising on Flinders University. M1 activists have also begun meeting on Adelaide University, with the goal of organising the largest possible contingent for the M1 student strike.
