John Pilger wins gold

Journalist and documentary maker John Pilger has been honoured for his film Welcome to Australia, which exposes this country's long history of racism against its Aboriginal people. (The film is reviewed in the September 22, 1999, issue of Green Left Weekly.)

Welcome to Australia won the gold medal at the New York Film Festival, in the documentary category. The festival's awards are amongst the most prestigious in the United States and Pilger's film beat several hundred entries from all over the world.
