MELBOURNE — "It is ironic that our political and financial leaders hail the 'globalisation' brought about by bodies such as the World Economic Forum, World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, yet are fighting tooth and nail to close Australia off from the Third World", Arun Pradhan one of the organisers of a protest for refugee rights, planned for October, told Green Left Weekly.

Pradhan condemned the Australian government for its demonising of the refugees who protested at Woomera on August 28, for pulling out of several United Nations human rights bodies because they have criticised Australia's human rights record and for pressuring government-funded refugee organisations.

Resistance, the Democratic Socialist Party and the Iraqi Federation of Refugees (Australia) have initiated the demonstration for refugee rights, to be held at the Melbourne GPO, 5pm on Friday, October 13. For more information, or to sponsor the event, phone Arun on 9639 8622 or email <melbourne@dsp.org.au>.
