Liberals bomb out on job creation
By Dave Wright
HOBART — At a time when the state Liberal government is slashing more than 1100 public sector jobs, a new job subsidy program has failed to create a single job.
The "Tas Jobs for Youth" scheme was projected by the government to create more than 4000 jobs. Companies could claim up to $8000 for providing a full-time job. The scheme was the linchpin of the Liberals' election slogan, "Jobs, Jobs, Jobs".
In response to criticism in parliament, employment minister John Beswick said it was too early to call the scheme a failure.
