Move for legal recognition of same-sex couples

BRISBANE — The Queensland Labor opposition announced last week that it will introduce an amendment to the Powers of Attorney Act to include the recognition of same-sex couples in a range of legal contexts. Labor shadow attorney general Matt Foley touted the amendment as a sign that the ALP was "moving with the times".

The National Party-led government is likely to oppose the amendment and Christian fundamentalist MP Liz Cunningham holds the balance of power in state parliament.

While the gay and lesbian community has welcomed Labor's decision, Queensland Association for Gay and Lesbian Rights spokesperson Shayne Wilde said: "Given Labor's dismal record in not recognising our families, and the fact that there is a state election looming, we would like to see more commitment from the ALP in extending equality to our partners and families before we can give our full support."
