Newcastle SRC elections

By Shane Bentley

NEWCASTLE — The progressive "Activate" ticket breathed some life into elections for the Newcastle University Students Representative Council, held April 18-21.

Activate won four out of five contested executive positions with an average 60% of the vote. Its main opposition was the Liberal-backed "Students for Students".

Activate stands for greater student involvement in the Student Association; a better deal from the University Union; a student bill of rights for quality education; improved safety, child-care and student accommodation; improving university waste minimisation; working within the National Union of Students to pressure the federal government to change its education policies.

Previous SRCs have been dominated by Labor students. This election result should provide an opening for students to become involved in a range of campaigns and actions.
