The defeat of the US-NATO occupation of Afghanistan is summed up by the image of a United States helicopter rescuing diplomats from Kabul’s Green Zone.
The initial invasion was revenge for the 9/11 terror attacks, even though the Afghan people were not responsible. After nearly 20 years of war, the deaths of tens of thousands of Afghans and displacement of hundreds of thousands, many are asking why this disaster was allowed to go on for so long.
Australian governments were willing participants. Now, the Morrison government is resisting mounting pressure to offer safe haven to 20,000 Afghan minorities and women – targets of the Taliban.
