Okinawa Dreams OK — When a young woman was raped by US soldiers, Okinawa suddenly hit the headlines. The world learned that 74% of the US military presence in Japan — 30,000 troops — was concentrated there. Now the anti-base movement is reaching its peak, with mass demonstrations demanding the kind of independence Okinawa enjoyed before the island was taken over by Japan and shattered by the battle of Okinawa in 1945. This special looks at the politics of the anti-base movement, demands for independence and autonomy and the island's vibrant and fascinating culture. The producers, Tony Barrell and Rick Tanaka, interview the Okinawa governor, women activists and US troops. ABC Radio National, Sunday, June 23, 8.30pm.
