Radio Eye — The Late MacBeth — In 1989 the Scottish poet George MacBeth and his wife Penny moved to Ireland to live in County Galway. A few months later, George MacBeth was diagnosed as suffering from motor neurone disease, of which he died in early 1991. Through his poetry, The Late MacBeth provides an anatomy of a cruel disease and the destruction it caused two people deeply in love. Produced by Lorelei Harris. International Politics: An Australian Perspective — Detente, the Counter Culture and Gough Whitlam (1968-1975) — For those who take their education best before the sun rises! This program begins with a look at the collapse of containment and the rise of detente. In 1972 Gough Whitlam was elected prime minister, and Australia was perceived as playing a new role in world politics. ABC Radio National, Tuesday, July 12, 5.10am.

Soundstage — Talking Heads — Part one. In monologues Alan Bennett tells tales of "ordinary, uneventful, desperate" lives. A Chip In The Sugar: Bennett as Graham Graham, who lives a sheltered life with his widowed mother, until a chance encounter in the street revives a chapter from her past. Her Big Chance: Julie Walters as Lesley, a struggling actress who describes her work in a low-budget movie that will transform her fortunes. ABC Classic FM, Tuesday, July 12, 8pm.
