Rainbow Warrior on tour of Australia
By Joe Kim
PERTH — Greenpeace launched its Cities and Coasts campaign in Fremantle on Australia Day, January 26, with the arrival of its flagship, Rainbow Warrior. The vessel sailed into Fremantle with an international crew of 12 who will embark on a three month tour of Australia.
The 1993 Rainbow Warrior Solutions Tour heralds a new direction for Greenpeace, whose agenda will now focus on "where the problems start — in the cities", Greenpeace chief executive officer Lynette Thorstensen explained at the press conference.
Mike Collison, the WA cities and coasts campaigner, and Joel Stewart, the captain of the Rainbow Warrior, outlined a campaign that will involve a comprehensive sampling program of water quality in coastal zones.
Thorstensen said the campaign would also have a strong focus on education, with community meetings and discussions planned. "Solutions exist to the majority of our environmental problems", Thorstensen said, "but there seems to be little political will to implement them. This campaign will go a long way toward creating that political will."
