Refugees demanding permanent visas have shifted their protest from the Oakleigh office of former Home Affairs minister Clare O'Neil to the Docklands office of the Department of Home Affairs.
They began at the new location on July 29, shouting slogans including “12 years too long; Permanent visas now!”
Thousands of refugees have been on temporary visas for about 12 years. They have to renew them regularly, every 6 months, 3 years or 5 years. This creates a feeling of insecurity and makes it hard for them to plan their lives.
They plan to stay until their demands are met.
