Retro pop out of control

The Gilberts, a five-piece Brisbane pop band, have just released their first CD, Life Is Just This Very Big Thing And It's All Getting Out Of Control. They started out at the University of Queensland a few years ago and moved onto the Brisbane stage with performances at venues such as Green It Up (a GLW fundraiser). They represent one of the many refreshing young bands to challenge the "mainstream" of multinational record companies.

This CD, a six track of original upbeat guitar pop, delivers melodic pop bliss; retro-pop is mixed with an original quirky slant with great results. Throughout their melodic pop song structure flows a socially conscious element.

The title track, "Life Is Just This Very Big Thing And It's All Getting Out Of Control", is about wanting social change but being overwhelmed in isolation. "Sandpit Called the World" is a criticism of how those who rule the world treat it as a game for their own ends. In an industry often obsessed with glorifying alienation and frustration, it's great to see a band moulding fun pop music with positive lyrics.

The Gilberts are a fun, energetic band and this CD captures the strong song writing and arrangement skills of members Dent and Greenway. Look out for it in independent music stores and for any future performances in your city. Remember, pop is not dead.
