Green Left Weekly is now in full colour. The new colour look adds to the attractiveness of Australia's premiere weekly socialist newspaper. It is an important step forward as we seek to further expand our distribution, in a period when the need for progressive alternative sources of news and commentary in this country is more critical than ever.
With the ABC and SBS under attack, and the domination of the Murdochracy in Australia's mass media increasing, it is crucial that people support the alternative media, especially Green Left Weekly.
The current crisis facing Tony Abbott and his government is not a product of "failing to sell the message effectively", as many commentators in the political mainstream and the big business media complain. It is the actual content of the message — cut wages, public services, democratic rights, and sell off the remains of the country's public assets, all in the interests of private profit.
The Queensland election debacle for Campbell Newman and the Liberal-National Party is a clear warning to both sides of mainstream politics that selling off public assets, especially the power industry, is unacceptable to the community. Abbott, the federal Coalition and NSW Liberal Premier Mike Baird, ignore it at their peril.
Green Left Weekly has been campaigning strongly over the past several years against the dominant neoliberal mantra of privatise, cut wages and services and serve the interests of the super-rich over the workers and the poor.
We have exposed federal and state government schemes to sell off public assets to fund private infrastructure, such as toll roads and property developments. We have called for the nationalisation of the mining, banking and energy corporations, under worker and community control, to serve the interests of the public and care for the environment.
We have reported on and campaigned for the movement against coal seam gas; for women's rights; the equal marriage campaign; for Indigenous rights and sovereignty; and against the escalating attacks on unions and workers' rights and conditions.
We have campaigned relentlessly for real action on climate change, and for eco-socialist solutions to the deepening crisis of capitalism.
Green Left Weekly not only tells the harsh truth about this moribund system, it offers political alternatives as a way forward for humanity.
For these reasons, we need your support to maintain and constantly improve our publication. Going full colour is just the latest step in an ongoing process of development of Green Left Weekly, on paper and also on-line.
