A national day of protest has been called by community groups following the federal government’s push for a gas-led recovery.
The #ProtectOurFutureNotGas NDA was initiated by Fridays for Future and is being organised on November 28.
The protest aims to show solidarity with First Nations’ people opposing coal seam gas mining and fracking in NSW and the Northern Territory.
It is also calling for: an end to public funds for gas, or any other fossil fuel projects; for 100% renewable energy by 2030; all schools to go solar; and for 1 million new jobs to be created in an expanded renewable energy sector.
So far, more than 70 community groups have indicated their support, including Green Left.
Gas is not clean energy and the federal government is not aiming to use it to transition: it is a dangerous polluting fossil fuel and extracting it releases methane, which has a global warming potential up to 84-86 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
