Tent embassy burnt down

Nicole Hilder, Wollongong

In pre-dawn hours of September 19 the Sandon Point Aboriginal Tent Embassy (SPATE) was destroyed by fire while five occupants were asleep inside. The tent embassy had stood on the site for more than three years.

The Stockland Trust Group is attempting to build 1200 dwellings on the site despite ongoing Indigenous and local community opposition.

A working bee to rebuild the tent embassy was held over the September 25-26 weekend.
