Thousands of people protested in cities around Australia on the third anniversary of the US-led invasion of Iraq. On March 17, 1000 people marched in Melbourne against war and racism, angered by news of the largest US air strikes since the invasion that had just been launched near Samarra, north of Baghdad. More than 1000 people marched through the streets of Sydney on March 18, vowing to continue protesting until the occupation of Iraq is ended. Speakers called for the troops to be withdrawn from Iraq and for no attack on Iran.
