Boys and Balls

In Bed With Your Neighbours
Directed by Doerthe Janson
Presented by Gil Scrine Films
August 19-21, University Hall, Harris St Ultimo, Sydney; August 26-28 State Film Theatre, Melbourne; August 29-September 1 State Library of Queensland, Theatrette level 2, Brisbane

With Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and The Sum of Us wowing audiences around the globe with their up front and open portrayal of not-so-mainstream sexuality, these two documentaries provide a timely opportunity to come to terms with some of the debates, issues and hilarious interludes associated with sex in the 90s.

Both are creations of Australian women directors. Sue Thomson's Boys and Balls deconstructs the Australian male's fascination with ball games and includes interviews with such famous ball handlers as Merv Hughes and Ron Barassi. Hosted by sports gurus, HG Nelson and Rampaging Roy Slaven, it promises to be an enjoyable, off-the-wall doco.

In Bed With Your Neighbours by Doerthe Janson is an important and frank contribution to the safe-sex theory versus safe-sex practice debate. It argues that more than slogans are needed; a climate of open communication and tolerance for each other's sexual preferences and practices are essential elements in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Those interviewed in the film include people who could be your neighbours ... a journalist, an artist, a senior public servant. Their stories highlight the need for openness in negotiating safe sex and shatter conventional sexual stereotypes.

The first four callers on Friday August 19 after 9am to Gill Scrine Films on 02 716 6354 will receive four double passes.
