UNITED STATES: Socialist election campaign in Seattle

September 14, 2005
Issue

Socialist feminist Linda Averill, a bus driver and a union activist, is campaigning as a Freedom Socialist Party candidate for the September 20 Seattle City Council election. She is backed by her union, Amalgamated Transit Local 587, as well as other unions, left groups and activists from the feminist, labour, people of colour, queer and anti-war movements. Averill calls for raising the minimum wage to $17 an hour, stopping tax breaks for billionaires and developers and taxing them instead to fund education, health care, housing, jobs, and expanded transportation. She is also demanding the ban of electronic stun guns used by police. Averill opposes the war in Iraq and refers to the massive misery caused by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans as "collateral damage" of the war and the country's policies of privatisation over the past 30 years.
