WA socialists announce candidates

By Ana Kailis

PERTH — On September 1, the Democratic Socialists announced their candidates for the federal seat of Perth and the Senate. Iggy Kim will stand in Perth. The WA Senate team will be Sarah Stephen and Roberto Jorquera.

"We cannot accept the policies of the Liberal and Labor parties", Kim told Green Left Weekly. "The Liberals' GST tax package provides no answers to the economic and social problems that face the majority of working people."

Stephen, the Democratic Socialists' lead Senate candidate, is an organiser with the socialist youth group Resistance, which initiated the recent secondary school student walkouts against racism in Perth.

"Young people are the future of society. It is important and inspiring that they have come out in their thousands to protest the racist policies and remarks of Hanson and Howard", Stephen said. "Resistance is committed to continuing a mass campaign on the streets against racism. A rally, under the banner of 'Vote with your feet against Hanson', will be held on September 30."

Jorquera added: "Recent remarks by Hanson that political and economic refugees should return home when the situation in their country changes is an insult to the tens of thousands of migrants that have contributed so much to the Australian economy and society."
