1976: Police open fire on a non-violent march by 15,000 students in Soweto, South Africa, killing 566 youth.

1970: The first Green Ban is imposed in NSW by the Builders Labourers Federation to stop development at Kelly's Bush.

1880: Ned Kelly is captured in Glenrowan.

1933: German communist Clara Zetkin dies.

1979: A 24-hour strike is called to protest the arrest of union officials in WA.
