WA rail jobs to be cut
By Stephen Robson
PERTH — Westrail announced on July 13 that a further 460 jobs will be cut, in addition to the 750 to be lost with the planned closure of the Midland railway workshops.
The 460 jobs will be mostly from the East Perth head office, involving clerical and catering staff. Railways Commissioner Jim Gill foreshadowed further cuts in the next five years.
Gill said that the redundancy scheme offered to Midland workers would be extended to cover the new cuts.
Staff levels are presently 765. A 200-strong meeting of Australian Services Union members on July 15 called for more detailed information.
