Greens announce candidate for Fremantle
By Stephen Robson
PERTH — At a press conference on February 11, the Greens (WA) announced that Stephen Walker will be their candidate for the by-election on March 12 in the federal seat of Fremantle.
The by-election was created when former federal treasurer John Dawkins resigned from parliament. The ALP has already announced that former WA Premier Carmen Lawrence will be its candidate for the seat.
Walker is a 40-year-old solicitor who has been working on social welfare issues.
Local issues that Walker will be highlighting include the proposed industrial expansion and housing proposals in Kwinana, south of Fremantle, the Fremantle Road by-pass, public transport, unemployment and housing.
Walker told the press conference that the social welfare system should be "thoroughly revised". He called for a "fresh approach" by society, "particularly to young people".
